Fluorous rubber sealing rings exhibit exceptionally outstanding ozone resistance and can maintain stable performance even in extreme environments. They also boast excellent resistance to organic fluids (such as fuel oil, hydraulic oil and lubricating oil), various acids (including dilute and concentrated nitric acid, sulfuric acid and hydrochloric acid) as well as strong oxidants (e.g., high-concentration hydrogen peroxide). These properties enable it to deliver superior performance in harsh chemical environments.


In addition, fluorous rubber sealing rings possess excellent mechanical properties. They feature high tear strength and elongation at break, along with low compression set. Why Is the Ozone Resistance of Fluorous Rubber Sealing Rings Particularly Outstanding?

The core reason why fluorous rubber sealing rings exhibit outstanding ozone resistance lies in their molecular structure, which fundamentally avoids the mechanism of ozone erosion on rubber. This can be elaborated from two key aspects:


No Reactive Sites for Ozone Attack on Molecular Chains

The essence of ozone damage to rubber is that ozone molecules undergo addition reactions with unsaturated double bonds in rubber molecular chains, leading to chain scission, surface cracking, and aging failure of the rubber.

In contrast, the molecular backbone of fluororubber (e.g., FKM) is based on saturated carbon-carbon single bonds, with almost no unsaturated double bonds in its structure. Ozone molecules cannot find reactive sites, thus failing to trigger degradation reactions.

On the other hand, general-purpose rubbers such as nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) and natural rubber (NR) contain a large number of unsaturated double bonds in their molecular chains, making them highly susceptible to ozone attack and resulting in poor ozone resistance.


Carbon-Fluorine Bonds Form a Dense Protective Barrier

Fluorine is the most electronegative element. The carbon-fluorine (C-F) bonds formed by its combination with carbon atoms have extremely high bond energy (approximately 485 kJ/mol, much higher than the 414 kJ/mol of carbon-hydrogen bonds) and exceptional chemical stability.

A large number of fluorine atoms are closely arranged around the molecular chains, forming a dense "protective shell". This not only prevents ozone molecules from penetrating into the rubber interior, but also resists erosion from external factors such as ultraviolet rays and chemical media, further enhancing weather resistance and anti-aging properties.

The molecular structure characteristics of fluororubber fundamentally endow it with ozone resistance far superior to that of general-purpose rubbers.
